Water Filtration Systems For The Home: Discover How They Can Improve Your Life

Over the last decade or so, people have become increasingly aware of how ‘clean’ water is brought to their homes.  The excessive use of chlorine has become a major concern.  People are, perhaps rightly, suspicious that the water they use for drinking, cooking and bathing on a daily basis could be doing them as much harm as good.  Water filtration systems for home use are viewed as an essential defense against undesirable water contaminants.

The use of chlorine to treat municipal water supplies can generate the production of what are known as disinfection byproducts or DBPs for short.  These unpleasant compounds can influence our levels of well being and compromise health.  Very young children, who still have immature nervous systems, can be particularly susceptible to these disinfection byproducts.  Similarly, those who suffer from skin complaints may discover that the water they use makes their condition worse.
Some studies have suggested there is a link between certain forms of cancer and heavily chlorinated water.  While more research is required to determine the relationship between cancer and chlorinated water, people have a right to feel concerned.  DBPs have also been implicated in fetal damage and miscarriages.

It would be ludicrous to suggest that treatment of water supplies is unnecessary.  Readily available access to clean water has transformed how people live in the modern world.  Nevertheless it is not so unreasonable to suggest that the use of chlorine should be limited and strictly controlled.
Chlorine is used because it is such an effective disinfectant. It instantly kills many water borne diseases that could otherwise threaten public health. But, it is not all good news.  When it comes into contact with the many organic particles present in water it forms disinfection byproducts such as trihalomethanes.  These may be to blame for the many harmful effects of chlorinated water.

Whole house water purification systems can provide homeowners and their families with the reassurance that the water they use is really good for them.  Wherever water is used in the home it is safe because it is filtered before it even enters the house.  It is worth bearing in mind that as much harm, if not more, can be caused by inhaling water from steam or absorbing it through the skin as can be done by drinking it.

Water filtration systems for the home can be configured in a variety of ways.  An effective configuration is a three stage system which includes water softening action as well as filtering out chlorine.  There are multiple benefits associated with having a whole house filtration unit fitted.

People suffering from dermatitis or eczema often remark that their symptoms clear up as soon as a filter system is in place.  It can also help to minimize the accumulation of plaque on teeth.  That is enough to make anybody smile, but the good news keeps on coming.
When water has been softened it reduces the incidence of lime scale and as a result dishwashers and washing machines work better for longer.  Soap scum does not attach itself to baths, basins and shower curtains.  Hair and clothes wash much better.  Many people also find that filtered water is also far more pleasant to drink.  For a healthier and happier home, whole house water filtration systems are the answer.

Why A Polycarbonate Greenhouse Can Save $$$$$

In times of recession all families are looking to cut back, but if there is one area of growth (quite literally!) it is in the Grow Your Own market.  Families view growing their own food as a cost effective way of reducing weekly grocery bills.  It is also a good way for families to spend time doing something together, even the youngest members of the family can get involved.  However, there are always some initial costs, and it's up to the savvy family to reduce these wherever possible in order to get maximum gains from growing fruit and veg at home.

Many items of gardening equipment can be bought second hand at car boot sales quite easily.  Some items can be knocked together out of recycled materials, such as compost bins, cold frames and cloches.  An empty soda bottle makes a perfect bell jar for an emerging seedling!  The greenhouse however, is usually on the list of items that has to be bought, and on first investigations the costs often seem prohibitive.  However, if you choose durable and lightweight materials such as aluminium frames and polycarbonate glazing you can bring costs down considerably and you will soon recoup those costs in terms of reduced food bills.

These days a polycarbonate greenhouse can offer many benefits over their more expensive glass house cousins.  Polycarbonate glazing is extremely tough and virtually impossible to shatter, you will reap the rewards in the long run as you'll find replacing panes a very rare occasion.  It also makes the greenhouse a safer place for children to be.

Twin wall polycarbonate glazing also emits light evenly around the greenhouse ensuring steady growth amongst plants, UV filtering protects against scorch.  Insulation is always important for gardening families on a budget so you'll be glad to hear that polycarbonate is top of the pops when it comes to the most effective greenhouse insulation. Easy to put together and install, there is no reason not to get hold of a polycarbonate greenhouse before the next growing season commences.

Kinect or Wii?

There was some nervous (and a little stressful) umming and ahhing in our household prior to Christmas - why? - well eldest daughter requested a Kinect, which also meant buying an Xbox which we didn't already have.  A hefty price to pay if you buy 'the wrong thing'!  Especially as sooner or later you will have to go out and buy 'the right thing.'  (I'll give away my age here by saying I have friends who are still feeling the sting of having bought a Betamax instead of  a VHS video - it's prehistoric now, but the fear of wasting money on something that faces extinction in the technological survival of the fittest is ever present!)

Why did she want a Kinect?  She'd seen it advertised of course and thoroughly bought the whole 'best thing since sliced bread' hype.  She knows nothing about Xboxes, she has played Wii thanks to friends and relatives.  Because of this - and no doubt a quite unfounded suspicion that Xboxes were solely the preserve of hard-core gamers who like playing soldiers - we felt more inclined to buy her a Wii.  It seemed more like family entertainment.  And most of the Wii packages on the shelves, including various extras such as balance boards (the extras being the main disadvantage of Wiis), were cheaper than the Xbox 360 Kinect packages.

Eventually the decision was taken out of our hands, fate in the form of 'you should have got round to this earlier' dictated that by the time we'd made our minds up, we couldn't find a Wii for love nor money anywhere and hurriedly ended up buying the Kinect.

So what have we learned, aside from the importance of buying Christmas presents earlier?  Well the Kinnect certainly is suitable for younger children, our four year old neice enjoyed playing a totally innocuous bubble popping game.  Unlike the Wii, using the body as controller feels pretty good and works well, BUT you need space!  At least six foot away from the sensor for one player and eight foot for two player games.  My forty-eight year old partner learned how unfit he was - even at popping bubbles!  Which brings me to the final point, Kinect's survival will depend critically upon producing quality games that appeal to both families and the more traditional Xbox gamer.

How Quality Play Experiences Enhance Kids' Development

Further to my recent post on Childrens Wooden Toys I thought I would take a further look at the way in which quality play experiences can help children to develop.  Many of the toys I featured encouraged role-play of some sort, one particular type of role play is known as small world play.

Whenever child education professionals examine the concept of 'small world play' they're looking at how youngsters act out stories and fantasies by means of playing with small play equipment, as an example construction toys, plastic animals, little aeroplanes or some thing similar to a wooden doll's house complete with mini furniture and dolls.

Small world play motivates and aids children's educational development in many ways. It helps youngsters to greatly improve their communication abilities and try out new vocabulary from the secure boundaries of self produced play . It's especially vital to support these kinds of role-playing among small youngsters that suffer from speech difficulties if they're to have the ability to meet the requirements of school settings.

Small world play gives an empowering framework for youngsters to build connections with other experiences, introducing them into their play schemes. Playing this way youngsters can examine and test out occasionally confusing feelings and engage in areas of their sometimes confusing experiences so that you can make far better sense of them.

When taking part in small groups youngsters will occasionally develop narratives with other children, requiring them to pay attention to and entertain distinctive suggestions and collaborate effectively. Adults must support kids as they play and not be hesitant get involved and offer different ideas to inspire more adventurous explorations.

Strongly encourage youngsters to combine the play resources and ensure you have crayons and some paper available also. By including diverse resources in the play youngsters can refine and improve a wide range of abilities. You can bring every day house hold objects into the play, make a racing course for the cars around the house. Help kids to produce their own building block furniture to go in wooden dolls house, or make tiny masterpieces to blue tack to the walls. Introducing a small tray of sand or water can motivate children to explore different narratives. All the while children will be refining their manual dexterity, putting problem solving and creativity to the test and discovering who they are.

Why Wooden Toys Are Better

When we purchase children's wooden toys we invest in toys that are inspiring, entertaining and safe for them and safe for the environment. Enormous quantities of plastic toys are made every year. Lessening our dependence on plastic merchandise is most important.

Contrary to widespread thinking, recycling plastic material is still fraught with difficulties and is quite often neither cost efficient or energy efficient. Most plastics finish up in land fill sites slowly leaching polymers into the environment. Choosing superior quality, long lived wooden toys for the little ones is a practical alternative to popular plastic toys, wooden toys are not finished with chemical treatments and will be derived from sustainable sources for instance rubber wood.

The level of quality craftmanship in childrens wooden toys is obvious. Often they are made in small, nearby artisan workshops - in many instances offering a unique or tailored service. These appealing and more notably solid toys are extremely unlikely to find their way to the tip. In fact it is far more probable they are destined to become heritage pieces, greatly loved by family members and passed on from generation to generation. These toys become a powerful centre of pleasant childhood recollections to be cherished for ever .

Gimmicky, plastic toys are generally ugly, of low quality , noisy and promote only a desire for fleeting and transitory experiences, often doing little more than mimicking Tv show antics and robbing children of their inventiveness and capacity to form their own learning experiences . Most traditional wooden toys are educative in their simplicity , compelling little ones to begin using their own resources rather than assailing them with a barrage of beeps and flashing lights, which are transient , make no meaning and invite no more than shallow exploration. Stimulating children to improvise their own games allows children to find relationships from new and exciting experiences and figure out insights on how we explain and characterize dynamic situations .

Childrens wooden toys are colorful , charming and beautiful to the eye. Wooden toys don't clash horribly with our decorating choices but supply a comfortable ,lived in and laid-back atmosphere that is restful . Wooden toys imply a home life which is bustling, contented and easy going. Wood feels warm and inviting and is satisfying to the touch, promoting tactile sensory exploration. We should not suppose that due to the fact a wooden toy doesn't vibrate, make noises or have bells they won't please young children . That is condescending. Adults really should believe in their judgement and respect their growing confidence, they will play with wooden toys very happily and find for them innovative uses most of us would never consider.

Give Potted Christmas Trees A Go

Once the Christmas season arrives our carbon footprints usually tend to become a little bit deeper, although there's plenty of eco-friendly things people can very easily do to scale back our footprints.  Here are a few ideas:

It is easy for those charged with responsibility for the Christmas meal to get somewhat fraught, we seek to accommodate each individual taste and all scenarios, the end result is we often shop for far too much food and finish up with tons of waste. Before you go to the shops try to make a comprehensive list of all the meals you will make for the festive season this should focus you upon the things you genuinely need to buy.

Next there is the trash produced by excess packaging and wrapping. It is a whole lot better and more thoughtful to make home made gifts and this will without any doubt reduce your impact. Why not consider creating your own greeting cards from scraps or your own gift wrap that you can dump in the compost when you've done with it? Decorate your house with evergreens, like holly and ivy instead of tinsel .

While we’re on the topic of decoration, the unnecessary cutting of fir trees at this time of year ought to be addressed. Perhaps you should give some thought to living Christmas trees. Taking care of living Christmas trees is really easy provided that you follow a few simple rules.

If you explore online you will find established garden suppliers who are willing to ship potted Christmas trees to your front door, and if you care for your tree the right way and keep it living, the following Christmas you will have to do no more than retrieve it from the back garden. For each year you manage to keep your potted christmas trees alive, means that you will not need to splash out for another one, which is excellent news as Christmas trees don't come cheap. This sounds a great deal easier than setting off for a Christmas tree and then asking yourself how you will ever squash it into the car! And you have a further bonus, your car will not wind up full of fir needles.

Potted Christmas trees have good rootballs that enable your tree to remain in good condition – a cut tree can never live for long – for this reason your tree will hold onto its needles. The constant sweeping up of needles is among those tasks you could do without during this chaotic time of year!

In fact your time would be better spent lookin up royal caribbean ships.
